Practice One - Alonso sets early Monaco pace

Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari renaissance continued in Monaco on Thursday morning in the first practice session which was terminated nine minutes prematurely and not resumed after Heikki Kovalainen’s Caterham laid a trail of oil in the tunnel following an engine failure.

Alonso lapped his F2012 in 1m 16.265s, 0.365s quicker than Romain Grosjean’s Lotus on 1m 16.630, but the times were tight with Sergio Perez next up for Sauber on 1m 16.711s from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton on 1m 16.747s, Williams’ Pastor Maldonado on 1m 16.760s and a revitalised Felipe Massa on 1m 16.843s for Ferrari.

Kamui Kobayashi was well in touch in seventh place in the second Sauber with 1m 17.038s, ahead of Jenson Button in the second McLaren on 1m 17.190s, Sebastian Vettel in the lead Red Bull on 1m 17.222s, Nico Rosberg in the lead Mercedes on 1m 17.261s, team mate Michael Schumacher on 1m 17.413s and Nico Hulkenberg in the lead Force India on 1m 17.631s.

Mark Webber was down in 13th in the other Red Bull on 1m 18.106s, ahead of the Toro Rossos of early pacesetter Jean-Eric Vergne on 1m 18.209s and team mate Daniel Ricciardo on 1m 18.252s, Paul di Resta in the second Force India on 1m 18.302s and Bruno Senna on 1m 18.617s in the second Williams.

Kovalainen just headed Caterham team mate Vitaly Petrov, 1m 19.039s to 1m 19.341s, then a surprise 20th was Narain Karthikeyan on 1m 20.838s for HRT. Charles Pic was right behind him on 1m 20.895s in the lead Marussia, ahead of team mate Timo Glock on 1m 21.638s and HRT’s Pedro de la Rosa on 1m 22.423s.

Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen, who sports a James Hunt paintjob on his helmet in Monaco, didn’t get a timed lap as the team worked to change his steering set-up.
