Sebastian Vettel gave Red Bull the last laugh in the final practice session here in Montreal on Saturday morning, after the team had been told overnight to make changes to the RB8's hubs after suggestions to the FIA from rival teams that they were gaining an aerodynamic advantage by using airflow within the wheel to energise flow over the front wing.
Vettel beat Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso by just 0.006s to set a fastest lap of 1m 14.442s, and the fact that one second covered the first 16 cars sets up a tremendous fight in qualifying this afternoon.
Alonso lapped in 1m 14.448s, to run ahead of Friday’s pacesetter Lewis Hamilton on 1m 14.712s for McLaren, then came Mark Webber on 1m 14.724s in the second Red Bull, Pastor Maldonado for Williams on 1m 14.755s, Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari on 1m 14.767s, Michael Schumacher for Mercedes on 1m 14.796s, the Lotuses of Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen on 1m 14.873s and 1m 14.977s, and Nico Hulkenberg for Force India on 1m 14.992s.
Besides Vergne, Nico Rosberg failed to record a time after his Mercedes stopped with a fuel connector problem on its out lap, slightly delaying the session.
There was also a slight headache for Raikkonen, as the Finn was fined €2,500 by the Montreal stewards for crossing the white line on the entry to the pit lane. He had veered off to the pits at the last minute after making a mistake at the final chicane.
