FIA's permanent number process begins

Governing body the FIA has contacted Formula 1 drivers to collect their preferred permanent race numbers.

Earlier this week, the sport's Strategy Group and Commission ratified the use of full-time numbers, which will be assigned to drivers for the remainder of their careers in the top echelon.

Drivers have been asked to submit their ultimate choice, with two backup options should a driver that finished higher in this year's standings desire the same number.

Valtteri Bottas is the first driver to announce that he has formally applied for his permanent number, with his preference being 77, followed by 17 and 11.

Nico Rosberg said at a sponsor event earlier this week that his three choices would be six, five and nine, while Sergio PĂ©rez is eager to secure number 11.

Number one will be kept aside for reigning quadruple World Champion Sebastian Vettel.
