Canadian Grand Prix 7th June

7 June 2015 – Lewis Hamilton kept Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg at bay to claim victory in Sunday afternoon's Canadian Grand Prix, while Williams recorded its first podium finish of the season with Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton made a perfect start as the lights went out to hold his lead into the first corner, ahead of Rosberg, Kimi Räikkönen and Bottas.

Hamilton soon put a couple of seconds between himself and Rosberg, while the front four gradually pulled away from the rest of the pack.

Räikkönen was the first of the frontrunners to pit, swapping from Super Softs to Softs, but suffered a spin at the hairpin on his out-lap.

This gave Bottas a golden opportunity when he pitted just a lap later, and he duly jumped his fellow Finn to move into the podium positions.

Hamilton and Rosberg made their stops shortly afterwards, with Rosberg staying out a lap longer and bringing the lead gap down by a second.

Rosberg did his best over the second stint to put pressure on Hamilton, but the latter responded to any surges in pace to take the chequered flag.

Bottas finished some 40 seconds adrift, followed by charging Ferrari pair Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel, who both completed two pit-stops.

Räikkönen was five seconds away from reclaiming third, with Vettel a further four seconds back after an inspired charge from 18th on the grid.

Felipe Massa was another to showcase his overtaking prowess, climbing from 15th to sixth and capping a fine weekend for the Williams team.

Having threatened to do so in previous races, Pastor Maldonado – the final man on the lead lap – finally took his first points of the season in seventh.

Force India's Nico Hülkenberg and Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat followed in eighth and ninth, while the other Lotus of Romain Grosjean completed the points.

Grosjean was on course for a much stronger result, but he clashed with Will Stevens while putting a lap on the Manor driver, forcing both into an extra stop.

The stewarding panel later opted to hand Grosjean a five-second time penalty, but that ultimately had no impact on his finishing position.

Last year's race winner, Daniel Ricciardo, could only finish 13th, having been unable to match the pace of team-mate Kvyat throughout.

The day was even worse for McLaren-Honda, with both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button retiring from the race amid technical problems.

Both were critical on fuel from the early laps, leading to a frustrated radio message from Alonso, who said the situation made him "look like an amateur".

Heading to Austria, Hamilton's victory increases his championship lead over Rosberg to 17 points, with Vettel now 43 points adrift in third.
